This is a song called "Loved By Wolves", ostensibly about my buddies, Two Cow Garage, and the present-mindedness they embody on stage. It was written on the back of a rental-car agreement in the parking lot of the White Water Tavern in Little Rock, Arkansas. There, amongst the gravel, heat, and mosquitoes, the hood of Grand Champeen’s van made for an excellent writing surface. After writing it, I went inside the WWT, to the upstairs loft, and worked it out a few different ways while Mike D slept on the pool table (he was wearing a yellow hollow-body guitar at the time--Micah’s, I think). I played it live about two hours later for a room full of super-gracious friends differently than I’d written or worked it out earlier. C’est la vie, I guess.
lyrics
When we were young, we knew everything
And that might not be a lie
From St. Louis to Baton Rouge
And Austin
The lights--we caught that fever so far
And the soundtrack to our summer, was a still, small voice
The clang of electric guitars
And the rain came down, on some far away Ohio home
We were loved by wolves, could hardly settle down
With eighth notes so sweet and the highway in our hands
Set-off for a little while, faster than the sound of speed
The toughest set of kids that the Mohawk had ever seen. . .
There’s a change in the season
A change in the key
In the shade of a brand-new July
With forever as our witness, we were dyed in the settling sun
Set fire to these phrases, one-by-one
