about

This is a song I wish I never needed to write. It's a song about a friend and the whitewash of emotions that have accompanied my (and others') memory of him. It stems partly from a dream during which he and I were driving on the BQE with John Updike, discussing quantum mechanics. The other part stems from an ongoing conversation and consideration concerning “finishing the story”. I’ve reworked and rewritten this song more than any other, which I think is reflective of its subject matter. Jim would, indeed, have pushed me to get it right—his New England accent drawing out my name: 'Vooo-mahn'—not in a sense of the song being perfect, but rather of it being more effective in its relative closeness to its very purpose, as well as the embodiment of the sensibilities it seeks to convey. We are, indeed, all in this together. XOXO.

lyrics

There’s too much white light to see tonight
I wonder what the satellites look like from outer space
I wonder if they can make out
The sound of this tiny something—kicking—
Deep own in my soul
There’s too much white light to tell tonight
Where I end and everything else begins
I can’t save you or anyone else
I can’t even speak my name
I wonder what I look like from up on a satellite
I wonder if I shine like a diamond jubilee
And in that dream, I swerved our car on the BQE
You told me to finish the story
And in that dream I wrecked our car on the side of the 405
You told me to finish the story
And in that dream I flew right off of the bridge on the Kennedy
You told me to finish the story

We’re all in this together
We’re all in this together one-by-one

Dear Jimmy, what’s it look like when everything begins
Dear Jimmy, what’s it sound like when everything begins
Dear Jimmy, what’s it feel like when everything begins
