about

This song was initially written in the lobby of the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, CA. That's apropos of nothing, as it's a song about cleaving the inauthentic from the authentic. It was finished more than a year later over free (stolen) coffee in the courtyard of yet another hotel, The Ludlow, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Sometimes (at least it seems so to me), guilt and shame get pretty tangled and the end result is a sort-of self-defeating resistance aimed at further enabling the familiar, which I'd argue isn't what an individual actually desires. This song, then, speaks to the opportunity that's buried behind this resistance in a given moment of choice and/or action--the opportunity that presents itself on the very hem of each and every present circumstance. It’s a hodgepodge mix of inspiration taken from a chapter of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (“Valentine Heart”), and a short story I wrote entitled “Miscarriage”.

lyrics

I got lucky then
On the hems of the present tense
Few and far between the jagged lines
And the highway keeps me busy; the motion tends to deceive
Sometimes, it's not the best things we believe
And the long nights in Chicago
The telephone by my bed
The stories of things I should've done in my head
I had a feeling once for a whisper
Some kind of elegant compromise
It's the kind of thing that keeps me awake for awhile
It's the kind of thing that breaks this Valentine heart

Stay young, forever. . .this Valentine heart

And then we drive the way home
The Golden State and further along
These chemicals have been burning up my tongue
She had tattoos on her wrists
The mile marks and trees went by
The left one it read "lost", the right, just "one"
Beneath the easy stream of telephone lines
Where whispers scream and words stand by
The highway just ain't long enough to run
And then we drive the way home
The Golden State and further along
These chemicals have been burning up my tongue
She had tattoos on her wrists
The left one it read "lost", the right, just "one"
The right, it just said “one"

Stay young, forever. . .this Valentine heart
